Since the Glossary originally appeared, the authors have been saddened by the death of Maurice Barley, who was the originator and moving force behind the project. This glossary combined his long held interests in the history of names for buildings, in the study of timber-framing, and in making the crooked straight and the murky clear. Maurice saw the first drafts of the improvements for this edition, and approved many of our alterations. To him this new version of the Glossary is offered in pia memoria.
